Chapter 16

“Hello, Mr. Boyd? This is Daniel Stinson. We met after you and the other guy, Art, towed me to Sausalito.”

“Oh hi, Daniel. How are you?”

“I’m fine, thanks. Did you get my email about ten days ago?”

“I don’t think so,” said Jackson, slowly.

“Well, never mind. Glad I had your cell number. I wanted to follow up about the Coast Guard.”

“You mean the volunteer part, the Auxiliary, right?” Jackson asked.

“Yes, right. Sorry. How do I get involved or at least find out more?”

“I can email you some links to various websites,” Jackson replied. “You can learn about our missions and requirements. From there you can decide if you want to pursue membership. It is not all that complicated. I will guide you through it if you are interested.”

“That sounds great. I really want to learn about the boating on the Bay. Let me give you my email address. Ready?”

“Yes, shoot.”

“Okay, it is [email protected].”

Crap. I thought that email was spam. This is awkward. Jackson decided against disclosing his oversight.

“Got it. What does the ‘DS222001’ stand for?”

“DS is my name, Dan Stinson. The rest is just gibberish.”

“Interesting. So I will send you some Auxiliary materials, and you can contact me if you’re still interested. Okay?”

“Yup, thanks. Bye.” Daniel hung up before Jackson could respond. Jackson scowled and put down his phone. Feeling guilty about dismissing Daniel’s email, he quickly composed and launched a follow-up email to Daniel. It included lots of informative links and membership materials. Jackson had completed his Auxiliary Human Resources Staff Officer job for the day.

Three days later, Jackson got another email from Daniel. It was in his spam file, but he moved it to his inbox to avoid future mix-ups. Daniel claimed he reviewed the history, mission and membership materials, and he wanted to meet. Dan somewhat brazenly suggested that he accompany the crew on a patrol.

In the past, Jackson had generally met member-candidates “for coffee” at a neutral place. When it got down to completing the stack of membership documents, he invited them to his house. Jackson did have a patrol coming up, however, and he could have Daniel sign a guest waiver, releasing the Aux, Coast Guard, and the Feds from all liability.

Jackson weighed the pros and cons and concluded that he would offer Daniel a ride on Salt Shaker for the Labor Day patrol. Jackson wanted to have Art take this guy’s temperature again—check him out. Art had a very sensitive clown-detector, and Daniel seemed like a good specimen for Art’s evaluation.

Jackson emailed Daniel the patrol particulars, a soft copy of the release form, and instructions to sign and return the document before Labor Day. Diraux needed to sign off on having Dan aboard. Daniel complied.
